Peace Network: Standing with Educators for Global Peace and Democracy on World Day for Decent Work
On October 7, educators worldwide unite under the banner of the World Day for Decent Work, joining the global union movement in calling for peace and democracy. The message is clear: without peace, there can be no social justice, and without social justice, peace is unsustainable. At Peace Network, we wholeheartedly support these efforts and urge our community to join in advocating for these fundamental rights.
As Education International President Mugwena Maluleke eloquently stated, “The call for peace is inseparable from the call for quality public education.” Education serves as a cornerstone for building peaceful and democratic societies. However, in times of conflict, schools are often targeted, leaving children, communities, and entire generations at risk of being trapped in poverty and inequality. This is why Peace Network emphasizes the critical role that education plays in fostering lasting peace.
We believe that public education—a vital tool for social cohesion—must be safeguarded. Schools must be safe places where children learn, grow, and develop the tools necessary to contribute to a peaceful world. Without education, the future is bleak, and without peace, education cannot thrive.
A United Global Call for Peace
As conflicts persist across the globe, educators and peace advocates alike are raising their voices. In places like Myanmar, where a military dictatorship continues to suppress the population, the people’s demand for democracy remains loud and unwavering. In Ukraine, the devastating effects of Russia’s invasion have highlighted the urgent need for peace and the protection of sovereignty.
Meanwhile, in Palestine and Israel, the conflict has taken a tragic toll on civilians, displacing thousands and engulfing neighboring countries. Peace Network echoes Education International's call for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid access, and a lasting two-state solution. We also join the demand for the protection of civilians and educational institutions amidst the turmoil.
In Sudan, the ongoing war has caused untold suffering, with schools shutting down, exposing children to recruitment by armed groups and gender-based violence. The global response to such crises must be louder, more coordinated, and dedicated to ensuring peace and security for future generations.
Supporting Teachers in Crisis Zones
Educators are often at the forefront of crisis settings, providing much-needed stability and hope. The United Nations High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession has outlined crucial recommendations to support these teachers, including fair pay, dignified working conditions, and a focus on their well-being. These measures are essential for enabling teachers to continue their vital work in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
The Peace Network stands firmly behind these recommendations. We advocate for the creation of a Global Fund for teachers’ salaries in conflict zones, ensuring they receive the support necessary to keep education alive in these difficult circumstances. This initiative aligns with our broader mission of promoting peace through education and protecting those who dedicate their lives to teaching the next generation.
Join the Movement for Peace and Democracy
At Peace Network, we recognize the inextricable link between education, peace, and democracy. Today, we call on our community to join this global movement. The fight for decent work, quality education, and social justice is everyone's responsibility. Together, we can advocate for policies that promote peace, protect schools from violence, and secure a brighter, more equitable future for all.
Now is the time to act. Whether through raising awareness, supporting educators in crisis settings, or joining our collective efforts in humanitarian aid, we can all contribute to building a peaceful world where democracy and social justice thrive. Peace Network remains committed to supporting these global initiatives and invites you to stand with us in this vital cause.
Let’s come together to create a future where peace, education, and democracy are the foundations of every society.
